Illingworth first made an impression on the American junior circuit in 1998-1999 when he finished ranked # 3 in the country for boys under 16. He was a 4 time All-American selection and 4 time All-Ivy selection.

Since graduating from Yale in 2006, Illingworth has been playing squash professionally. He has achieved a ranking as high as # 37 in the PSA world ranking and is the highest ranked American player.
